Field Notes — an offline-first journal
A tiny, local-first note app for the outdoors — no account, no cloud, works with no signal.
A side project born from frustration: every note app I tried assumed a connection I often didn’t have. Field Notes is deliberately small — it stores everything locally, syncs only when you ask, and will happily outlive whatever service is fashionable this year.
Ideas I wanted to test
- Local-first as the default, not a premium feature.
- A file format you could still read in ten years without the app.
- An interface quiet enough to disappear on a phone in bright sun.
It’s still my daily driver on trips, and the thing I point to when someone asks what “local-first” actually feels like.
